of defense. earlier this weekend, i sat down for a rare joint interview with the top military leadership the outgoing secretary f defense leon panetta and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff general martin dempsey. >>> secretary panetta, welcome back to "meet the press." general dempsey, welcome. let me start with the man that is poised to take your place. he underwent on thursday a pretty tough round of questioning. he seemed to struggle with a lot of the answers. of course this is chuck hagel, the former republican senator from nebraska. look at some of his answers. >> i should have used another term, and i'm sorry. i would like to go back and change the words and the meaning. the bigger point is, what i was saying, i think -- what i meant to say, should have said, is recognizable. it's been recognized, is recognized. well, i said it. and i don't remember the context or when i said it. well, i said what i said. i said many, many things over many years. that's what i should have said. and thank you. >> secretary panetta, many of those answers did not satisfy a lot of republicans.

absolutely nothing about he has had the defense department is going to do with the rise of china in an era of budget cuts to the defense department he supports. it's very troubling, fred has a great way of putting this consensus reality that in a sense it doesn't matter. so did not do the job better and you can take that for granted. japan for the first time in a decade has not just her and run defense budget, modestly $1.6 billion increase. it would be nice to see it continue, but everyone watches very carefully to see the leading indicator, which is us and what we're willing to do. taiwan is a country rushing to the exit to make sure nothing comes between it and china and therefore i would argue the same credibility over whether the united states would intervene and i taiwan strait scenario, but we can expect the support and could even see treaty allies that would be required, for example, logistics and the like want to stay out of it because they question whether we are committed to it and it said it would drag them in and leave them exposed to the situation in which stability had to st

all of it came from the government cutting back, mostly because of cuts in defense spending. if government spending simply had not changed, the economy wouldn't have shrank at all. there is a lesson here, austerity has been hurting obama's economy, for the last four years. government spending has gone down in ten of the last 12 quarters. under ronald reagan and george w. bush you will find this part of economic growth and spending is pretty much all growing under the two republicans. you can see it under the graph. under reagan, it added in his first term a bit more than 6/10th of a percentage point, under bush, about half a point. under obama, it has been negative. if obama is a socialist he is terrible at it. here is the interesting thing, if the economy is shrinking because the economy is shrink, we now added new jobs, almost 200,000 jobs in december. and we added more than 150,000 jobs in january. what is amazing about this, this period was fiscal cliff element, it was what everybody was saying the economy really needed was deficit reduction. and this is a period in whic

there with defense. how when we think about who we are as americans, it's because we are united and committed across our government to do whatever is required to fulfill the missions we have assumed as public officials and public servants. >> right up there with defense. that is one of the big ideas of the obama presidency, right? essentially, reorienting how america deals with the world away from the u.s. military and toward u.s. diplomacy. to upscale our soft power capacity as a country so we have more options beyond just the option of force. this president did a lot to advance that idea simply by putting somebody as high profile as hillary clinton in the job of america's head diplomat. but the overall goal of upscaling state, upscaling diplomacy and development so they are right up there with defense, like she said today, that is widely regarded as a goal that is not yet realized. secretary clinton alluded to that fact today when she said she now plans to become an advocate for that cause from the outside. it is, frankly, easy to imagine that as the core for her return to public life and politics
